Nicklaus News – Week of June 18th

Jack Revisits Shinnecock… and Much More!

After a memorable weekend with family in Washington D.C., receiving the Lincoln Medal, Jack Nicklaus embarked on a busy schedule for U.S. Open week. He started the week by traveling to New York to open the new clubhouse at Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point. The clubhouse overlooks the dramatic 18th hole of the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, with stunning views of the New York City skyline.
The Golden Bear then headed to Dayton, Ohio, to support Speedway and its premier fundraising event for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals which raised close to $2.5 million and celebrated 40 “Miracle Children” representing 32 CMN Hospitals nationwide. Barbara Nicklaus, who serves on the Board of CMNH, joined Jack to speak to the audience of supporters, children and families.
Jack returned to New York and Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton to work on renovations to the course he designed and opened in 2006. Jack reviewed progress on the work being done on four greens as part of an overall greens renovation project. After his site work at Sebonack, Jack moved over to Shinnecock Hills to attend the inaugural USGA Celebration of Champions and serve as Honorary Starter for the four-hole exhibition featuring champions from the previous year’s USGA events
The following evening, Jack and Barbara had the pleasure of introducing their friend, Dennis Walters, who received the Bob Jones Award—the USGA’s highest honor, which recognizes those who demonstrate character, respect and integrity in golf. Barbara and Jack have each won the Bob Jones Award and remain the only couple to have received the honor in separate years.
Brooks Koepka, who grew up nearby the Nicklaus’ North Palm Beach home and learned to play golf at Bear Lakes Country Club, which features two Jack Nicklaus Signature Course layouts, became only the seventh player in history to repeat as U.S. Open Champion. He was presented the Jack Nicklaus Medal on Sunday after a grueling four days at Shinnecock.

Nicklaus Design Dominating in Asia

After an extensive trip this month through Asia, Asia Pacific President, Paul Stringer reports on ever-increasing progress in the company’s most flourishing market. “Trips to Asia are both exhausting and exhilarating at the same time,” explained Stringer. “There is so much business and growth for Nicklaus Design in this market; it is sometimes a challenge to keep up with it, but that is what makes it exciting and dynamic. Having local personnel from Nicklaus Design on the ground in Asia enables us to deliver the highest quality work that our clients demand for each project.”
Stopping first in Nanning, China, Paul reviewed the property at Guilin Li River, a golf course being designed by Jack Nicklaus II with daily field support by Design Associate Jim Wagner. Paul then ventured to Jakarta, Indonesia, to work on the construction timeline for the Jack Nicklaus II Signature Design at Puncak, West Java. From there, he made his way to Bangkok, Thailand, and evaluated renovation progress on Laem Chabang International Country Club, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course with work being overseen by Design Associate, Sean Quinn. Paul made additional stops in Hengdian and Beijing, China, where he signed a new redesign agreement with Wuhan International CC. The trip concluded in Hanoi, Vietnam, to visit with Madame Nga and the BRG Group which has contracted for ten Nicklaus Design golf courses, with the first four already underway. Nicklaus Design prides itself on being the leading golf design firm with local team members who work closely with clients in all corners of the world.

Sneak Peek II: The Jack Nicklaus Apparel Photo Shoot

The new Jack Nicklaus lifestyle apparel line was photographed this past week before it hits the shelves this fall. The collection combines an energetic lifestyle direction with a fashion-forward golf inspiration.
The photo shoot was staged in our backyard at Trump National Golf Club-Jupiter, one of the 35 Nicklaus Design golf courses in Florida. The male and female models showcased each collection against the picturesque backdrop of the golf course as well as distinct architecture features that surround the famous community. Jim Mandeville, Director of Photography for the Nicklaus Companies, commented, “When photographing our clothing, I always try to set scenes that highlight an active lifestyle feel because that is the inspiration behind both the men’s and women’s collections.
